La Torre dels Bous

History

The Torre dels Bous is one of the most emblematic elements of the walled enclosure of Hostalric.

Built in the 14th century, this tower was part of the defensive complex of the medieval town, one of the best-preserved in Catalonia. Its main function was surveillance and defense of the west flank of the wall, at a strategic point that dominated the northern access to the town and the Tordera valley.

The name "Torre dels Bous" comes from its proximity to Plaça dels Bous, a historic square where livestock-related activities, such as cattle fairs, were once held. However, the tower has been known by various names over the centuries and has undergone multiple transformations, both structural and functional.

For centuries, the tower played a key role in protecting the urban core. With thick stone walls, loopholes, and restricted access, it served as a stronghold during several conflict episodes, including the Carlist Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. Over time, however, its military function fell into disuse, and like many defensive structures, it entered a phase of deterioration.

Fortunately, heritage interest in Hostalric and its walls grew at the end of the 20th century, and the Torre dels Bous was declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest. This recognition facilitated the conservation and subsequent rehabilitation of the structure.

The recent restoration, completed in 2025, has transformed the tower into a unique tourist accommodation space. With a careful and respectful intervention of its original architecture, the interiors have been adapted to offer modern, comfortable apartments integrated within a heritage environment of high historical value. The goal has been to coexist the monumental character of the building with contemporary use, giving new life to a space that is part of the collective memory of the town.

Today, staying at the Torre dels Bous is much more than spending the night in Hostalric: it is living inside history. Visitors can enjoy an unparalleled setting, with direct access to the walled enclosure, views of the medieval town, and just a few steps from the castle. An immersive experience that combines heritage, comfort, and authenticity in the heart of La Selva.
